Vacation in an old 1978 VW LT35 camper
Published Aug 12, 2024
Alright lets cut to the case, the camper is finally finished (with only a single day to spare) and it completed a small roadtrip down through the Danish west coast and into Germany. The camper performed flawlessly (!) and we had a great time.
This is what the final product looks like:
FAQ
----
Q: Was it expensive to restore the camper?
A: Yes, very expensive. Over 90k DKK in total, not counting what we used on the vacation for gas, food and camping fees.
----
Q: Was it worth it?
A: Yes, for now. As long as the camper does not fail its planned MOT next year, we will be riding in style for the foreseeable future.
----
Q: Would you do another camper restoration in the future?
A: Never in a million years.
----
Q: Was the vacation fun?
A: Yes, it was great. We had a great time, met many new people and made some great memories.
----
Q: Did the camper experience any problems?
A: Yes, it would occasionally stop running on all cylinders. This mostly happeneded if we were stuck in traffic and had to idle for a longer period of time. It also runs insanely rich to the point that black smoke would be shot out the exhaust. It is also almost criminally underpowered, when driving up any slope, it would lose speed and we had to crawl up in 2nd gear, going a max of 20 kmph.
----
First stop: West coast
The first stop was in a small town called Hvide Sande. We stayed at a small campsite right next to the beach. The weather was great and we went to the beach for a quick swim and afterwards a nice cold beer at a nearby beer garden.
Next up: Skærbæk
We then headed towards the City of Skærbæk, because we wanted to go bowling. So we did just that.
First a quick piss break tho
The bowling alley was quite rundown and used, we had to switch lane because it broke midway through our game. Afterwards we went to a nearby bar, played some dice games and lots of beer.
Going south: Frøslev
To try and make this trip seem like it was atleast a bit more than just getting drunk and driving a big fat white turd of a campervan, we decided to visit the musueum of Frøslev Lejren. Located just before the border between Denmark and Germany.
This was an old concetration / holding camp used in the later stages of WW2. Brilliantly interesting, unless you are Alexander and hates museums.
A prisoner escaped from the camp by hiding in a box containing trash. The man was called Jørgen, he was 192cm tall and fit inside a small box. A replicae of the box is shown in the museum.
Of couse we had to take a break from all the history and get a beer before heading onward on our journey.
This was also the first time we used and tested our marquee tent. Although from 1978, it worked flawlessly.
Deutschland, saurkraut und bier
We then crossed the border into Germany and headed towards Flensburg. It was packed and we had to drive back to the border and find a nice big parking lot to stay for the night.
The next day we went to Flensburg and walked around the city. We found a local brewery and had a nice lunch and a couple of beers. Afterwards a cool church was in sight, and we had to check it out.
Northbound
We started to head home, but we still had a day left of exploration. Therefore we drove towards the city of Sønderborg. We parked down by the water and found a cool place nearby to eat and afterwards we went to a bar to play some pool.
The end
On Friday we headed home and that was the end of our vacation. The camper performed great and we had a great time. We are looking forward to the next trip, but for now we are just happy to be home.
